Allergic contact dermatitis (DAC)

WHAT IT IS

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is a skin inflammation that occurs due to a reaction of the immune system following contact with exogenous substances in people with a genetic predisposition.
The reaction involves an initial sensitisation phase, when the trigger substance (allergen) comes into contact with the skin. Then there is the trigger phase, during a second contact with the same substance.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES

One of the substances most frequently triggering sensitisation is nickel, with women being much more affected than men. Other substances frequently implicated in the development of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) are perfumes, cobalt and potassium dichromate. The allergens that most frequently cause photoallergic contact dermatitis are NSAIDs and topical antihistamines.

HOW IT MANIFESTS

Typically, skin manifestations occur about 24-48 hours after contact with the allergen in previously sensitised persons.
Lesions appear at the site of contact with the allergen. In contrast to the irritative forms, the manifestations of allergic contact dermatitis can also spread to other areas of the skin, particularly in chronic cases.
The most common symptoms are: itching, erythema (redness), burning, swelling, small blisters, papules and vesicles, xerosis (dryness of the skin), desquamation, hyperkeratosis, rhagades.
