WHAT IT IS

Psoriasis is defined as an inflammatory skin disease affecting the skin and internal organs, characterised by the appearance of reddened patches and/or plaques covered with thick, usually whitish crusts. It is a long-lasting (chronic), non-contagious disease that has a cyclical pattern: it alternates between acute and remission phases.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES

It is a multifactorial disease, with genetic, environmental and individual factors contributing to its occurrence.
Psoriasis is caused by an alteration in cell growth. In particular, it is characterised by the accelerated proliferation of epidermal cells (keratinocytes) and, at the same time, by a slowdown in the maturation of these cells, causing thickening of the epidermis. Added to this we have the immune system, which causes chronic inflammation of the epidermis.

HOW IT MANIFESTS

Symptoms include erythema and redness, skin thickening, scaling, dryness and itching. Typically, red patches topped with scabs form on various parts of the body: the scalp, elbows, knees, palms of the hands, nails, lower back and intergluteal cleft.
