WHAT IT IS

Atopic dermatitis, also commonly called constitutional eczema, is a non-contagious inflammatory skin disorder that often begins in childhood. It does not only occur on the skin, but can also affect the mucous membranes: in most affected individuals, there are recurrent episodes of asthma, rhinitis and allergic rhino-conjunctivitis, in conjunction with rashes and itching.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES

Atopic dermatitis affects people with a skin that is overly reactive to various stimuli (environmental and psychological). It is a disorder caused by genetic, environmental and immunological factors that contribute to altering the skin barrier by changing the metabolism of the lipids found in the epidermis, leading to the onset of the disease.

HOW IT MANIFESTS

Atopic dermatitis manifests with areas of dry, red, itchy, flaky and cracked skin, as well as with characteristic itching described as intense and unbearable. The distribution of lesions is age-specific. In infants, lesions develop on the face, scalp and extensor surfaces of the extremities. In older children and adults, lesions occur in the hollow of the elbows and knees.
