Mycosis of the feet (Athlete’s foot)

WHAT IT IS

Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis or ringworm of the foot) is a dermatomycosis or superficial mycosis affecting the glabrous (hairless) skin. It is a contagious disease that mainly affects the adult and male population.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES

It is a disease caused by a group of dermatophyte fungi (affecting the skin). Athletes and those who frequent public sports centres with a hot-humid climate (swimming pools, gyms, showers, etc.) are most at risk of infection. There are other predisposing factors such as: weakened immune system, genetic factors, poorly breathable footwear, excessive sweating, accumulation of moisture (wet socks or shoes), barefoot walking in public places, hot and humid environments, unsuitable footwear and socks (non-breathable synthetic materials), tight shoes.

HOW IT MANIFESTS

The micro-organisms responsible for the infection cause the characteristic symptoms of the disease: erythema, reddened and itchy skin, desquamation of the skin, especially between the toes and on the sole of the foot, thickening of the skin, formation of blisters with a watery content (most frequently on the sole of the foot and on the sides of the toes), appearance of skin cracks, malodorous feet, more or less intense itching, thicker nails with a twisted appearance and with a tendency to weaken until they tear and lose their natural colour.
